The question every chronic symptom client asks me
And the honest answer most people don’t get
After 12 years of being told my labs were normal while my body fell apart, this is the question I wish someone had asked me sooner.
There’s one question I get more than any other.
Some version of this:
“Grace, how do I actually know if my symptoms are nervous system related?”
It comes from people who have been to specialist after specialist. Who have done the elimination diet, the supplement protocol, the brain training app, the somatic course, the trauma work. Some of it helped a little. Some of it helped a lot, for a while. And then they crashed. Or flared. Or woke up one Tuesday and realized they were still living their life around their pain, their fatigue, their gut, their flare-ups, their racing heart, the symptom they don’t even have a name for yet.
It comes from people with diagnoses. And people without them. People who’ve been told they have fibromyalgia, IBS, POTS, chronic migraines, IC, long COVID, endometriosis. And people who have been told their tests are clean while they continue to live with daily pain, fatigue, and a body that doesn’t feel like theirs.
The medical system told them everything looks normal. The wellness world told them to do more. And somewhere underneath it all, they started wondering if they were the problem.
I get it. I lived it.
For 12 years I had chronic pain and chronic fatigue that nobody could fully explain. The kind of body pain that makes you cancel plans you were excited about. The kind of fatigue that makes you cry in the shower because the thought of drying off feels like too much.
I did everything right. I tried everything. And nothing got me to the bottom of it.
What finally changed things wasn’t another protocol. It was finally understanding the pattern.
THE PATTERN NOBODY EXPLAINED TO ME
Here’s the thing nobody told me for over a decade ->
It’s not just about which symptom you have. It’s about HOW your symptoms are showing up in your life.
When chronic pain and chronic symptoms are nervous system driven, there are patterns. Real, consistent, observable patterns. Not vague hand-waving. Actual things you can notice.
A few of the patterns I saw in myself, and that I see in nearly every client I work with:
Symptoms that flare during stress, pressure, or emotional intensity. Not always. But predictably enough that you can almost set your watch by it.
Symptoms that quiet down when you feel safe. On vacation. With certain people. In certain seasons of your life.
Symptoms that don’t fully match your test results. Your bloodwork keeps coming back fine but your body keeps falling apart.
Some better days, then a crash. The “I felt amazing yesterday and today I can barely move” cycle.
Symptoms tied to your menstrual cycle, sleep, or how busy your week is.
A history of trying things that should have worked, and they didn’t.
Underneath it all, a version of yourself that has been performing, holding it together, and pushing through for a very long time.
If even two or three of these are landing for you right now, I want you to pause for a second. That’s not a coincidence. That is your body talking.
YOUR BODY ISN’T BETRAYING YOU
The hardest part of living with chronic pain or chronic symptoms is that it can start to feel like your body has turned on you.
But here’s what modern pain science actually tells us, and what 12 years of being sick eventually taught me ->
When chronic symptoms are nervous system driven, your body is not betraying you. Your body is protecting you.
Your nervous system is doing exactly what it was designed to do. It is keeping you safe. It is staying on high alert. The problem isn’t that it’s broken. The problem is that it has learned to stay activated long after the original thing it was protecting you from has passed.
Modern pain science calls these neuroplastic symptoms.
What that means in real life ->
Your brain and nervous system can create very real physical symptoms when your body is stuck in protection mode. Real pain. Real fatigue. Real gut issues. Real migraines. Not imaginary, not in your head, not made up. Just sourced from a different place than where most medical models look for the answer.
And the wild part is, when you understand the pattern, you can do something about it.
WHY THE STANDARD APPROACH ISN’T ENOUGH
I know some of you are reading this and thinking, “Grace, I’ve done the nervous system work. I’ve done the brain training. And I’m still flaring.”
I see this all the time.
And the truth I wish more people in this space would say out loud is this ->
You can do all the regulation tools in the world, BUT if you don’t understand WHY your nervous system is staying activated in the first place, the tools will only take you so far.
Most nervous system content stops at the level of breath work and grounding exercises. Which are great. I use them every day. But they are not the whole picture.
The whole picture asks a deeper question ->
What has your body been carrying for so long? What have you been performing through? What has your nervous system been protecting you from that you haven’t fully looked at yet?
That is where the real work lives.
COME LEARN THE PATTERN WITH ME
This is exactly what I’m teaching inside my free live masterclass next Friday.
It’s called How to Know If Your Symptoms Are Nervous System Driven and What to Actually Do Next, and it is the class I genuinely wish someone had taught me 12 years ago, before I spent thousands of dollars and years of my life chasing the wrong things.
Inside, I’ll walk you through the specific pattern that almost every neuroplastic symptom shows. Why standard nervous system regulation tools sometimes don’t work, and what to do instead. What your body has actually been telling you all this time. A clear path forward, not another vague pep talk.
Friday, May 15th at 1pm ET. It’s free. There will be a replay if you can’t make it live.
Whether you have a diagnosis or you don’t. Whether your symptoms have been there for 6 months or 16 years. Whether you’ve tried a hundred things or you’re just starting to wonder if your nervous system might be involved.
If your body is still talking to you and nobody has helped you understand what it’s saying -> This is for you.
What pattern are you starting to notice in your own body? Hit reply and tell me. I read every one.
Keep healing with grace 🤍
